One of our main projects in Tijuana, is La Tribu de Jesus Orphanage (the tribe of Jesus). The orphanage is about 8 years old, and because they function in survival mode, the 97 children have fallen behind scholastically. Here at St. Michael’s, we have a small team of volunteers (parishioners) who go to the orphanage every Wednesday to teach literacy classes aiming to get these children re-immersed in the Mexican public school system. A local artist in Tijuana has joined forces with us and teaches piñata making and drawing classes to the teenagers at the orphanage, empowering them to join the workforce when the time comes.
