Funeral Ministry

Funeral

“The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise.  They are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs.  They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.”  (USCCA)

Funerals offer the opportunity to grieve and show support to the bereaved during difficult times.  Through prayers and actions during these times of suffering, we model respect for life, which is pleasing to God, and provide comfort to those who mourn.

At St Michael’s Church in Poway, funerals are also an opportunity to introduce or reunite people to Jesus and share our faith that is based on love. Our team is committed to offering solutions to help the bereaved honor their loved ones while still preserving the beauty of our Catholic traditions.

Funerals in the Catholic Church

A sacred ceremony that honors the deceased and provides comfort and support to the grieving family and community.

  1. Vigil Service (Wake): This is a time for family and friends to gather, often at a funeral home, to pray, share memories, and offer support to one another. The Rosary or other prayers might be recited.
  2. Funeral Mass (Requiem Mass): The central element of a Catholic funeral is the Funeral Mass, also known as the Requiem Mass. It is usually held in a church and includes:
  • Introductory Rites: Prayers and greetings by the priest.
  • Liturgy of the Word: Readings from the Bible, a homily by the priest, and prayers of the faithful.
  • Liturgy of the Eucharist: The celebration of the Eucharist (Holy Communion).
  • Final Commendation: Prayers for the deceased, asking God to welcome them into heaven.
  1. Rite of Committal: This is the final part of the funeral, held at the gravesite or crematorium. It includes prayers and the committal of the body to its final resting place.

Catholic funerals emphasize the belief in the resurrection of the body and eternal life, offering hope and consolation to the bereaved. The rituals are designed to commend the deceased to God's mercy, honor their life, and support those left behind in their grief.
